Chapter Eleven

Clay sang with the song playing in her bedroom as she got ready for work. She woke up this morning not with sadness, like she usually did, but with an excited energy. She checked her hair one last time in the mirror.

“Perfect.”

Then she slipped on her shoulder holster, which held the tools of her trade—two handguns—and finally her navy-blue suit jacket.

“Let’s go.”

Clay was excited to go downstairs and spend more time with Kat. Their text message conversation was different. They had crossed some invisible line between work colleagues and a true friendship. In fact, to Clay’s mind, they were teetering on the line between friendship and more.

Holly’s words of wisdom about trusting Kat had really helped Clay let go, and let herself trust, and embrace her attraction for Kat. Kat was still a mystery and had her secrets, but Clay had been convinced that was for people above her pay grade to worry about.

All Clay wanted to do was get to know her better. This week was going to be good. She had one event to accompany the princesses to, with Queen Bea, and then hopefully she’d get to make pizza with Kat and the girls. Then next week Kat had promised to help paint Badger’s Hollow, along with her other friends.

“Maybe we could make a night of it?” Clay said to herself. “I’ll get pizzas, drinks—it could be brilliant fun.”

Clay was all set and half walked, half ran out her bedroom door and down the corridor of the staff quarters. She couldn’t wait to see Kat. On Monday mornings, the royals left from Windsor Castle in the morning directly to whatever appointments or business they had, and later went home to Buckingham Palace. The Queen felt staying over Sunday nights stretched out the weekends at their favourite place.

So Clay’s first job on Monday morning was to escort Princess Teddy to nursery school, and that meant sharing the car with Kat. She bounced down the main staircase and to the front door. The car was already there waiting, along with Jack.

“Morning, Jack. Everything ready?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Every time Jack called her ma’am, Clay felt like looking behind her to see who he was talking to. She still thought of herself as the young, raw police officer who’d joined the protection squad just a few years ago.

“Good.”

Clay looked at her watch. Kat would be coming down soon. She heard a small burr of noise in the air and looked up to see a tiny drone camera. Azi walked round the corner, talking to her camera crew via earpiece and microphone.

“I want a shot from above as the car pulls away, Mike. Slowly drawing away so you see the full majesty of the castle.”

“Morning, Azi,” Clay said.

“Good morning, Clay. All ready for your big scene?”

“You’re making me nervous.” She didn’t like being the centre of attention. As officers they were meant to merge into the background, not be the main interest of the scene.

“Don’t worry. Just pretend the camera isn’t here,” Azi said.

Clay liked Azi.
